Copper Bells of Gujarat

Copper Bells of Gujarat
Gujarat is a land of great contrasts, stretching from the seasonal salt deserts
of the Kachchh (Kutch) district in the northwest, across the
generally arid and semiarid scrublands of the Kathiawar Peninsula,
to the wet, fertile, coastal plains of the southeastern part of
the state, north of Mumbai. Home to one of the most important textile
centres of India, Gujaratreflects the mythology surrounding the Hindu
deity Krishna (an incarnation of the god Vishnu), as transmitted
in the Puranas, a class of Hindu sacred literature.

The ancient architectural style of Gujarat, known for its
luxuriousness and intricacy, is preserved in monuments and temples such
as those in Somnath and Dwarka in the southwestern part of the state;
Modhera in the north;and Than, Ghumli (near Porbandar),
the Girnar Hills, and Palitana in the Kathiawar Peninsula.
Gujarat's diversity is mirrored in a rich assortment of handicrafts,
from embroidery, beadwork, wood crafts weaves, and pottery to
tribal arts.
A beautiful amalgamation of artwork exists here as
each district specialises in a different art form. Live Stock was
once major occupation of Kutch. The Lohar community from Sindh
(which is now in Pakistan) bought the craft to Kutch.
Primarily used to identify herds by the Maldharis who were
pastoral communities in the region, today it is a much celebrated
art form thanks to the younger generation aiming to give it a new
spin by creating different types of Wind Chimes, Xylophone,
Jhumar etc. They make the Morchaang too, an indigenous musical
instrument . The artisans used waste iron such as from damaged cars, damaged iron plates etc. and recycle them to make Copper Bells making it a recyclable and sustainable craft.
